My childhood goodies...Cebu La Fortuna Bakery

In my youth the goodies in this bakeshop were a privilege. We were excited when Nanay bought home her favorite diced mongo hopia be it big or small because we wanted to eat. My favorites were the pianono and the jelly roll and my sister and brother like them too.

Everytime Nanay bought any of those goodies from Cebu La Fortuna Bakery from Borromeo Street our mouths would water with anticipation. Like puppies waiting for their bones. But Nanay would tell us to wait because she needed to divide them equally so that every one in the family had a piece of the hopia.

But that was some time ago. We all grew up and discovered new goodies locally and even internationally. Because there were new bake shops, cake shops and pastry shops in the market in a much better location, better presentation and better taste. Though more expensive but the quality and taste is better. Then yesterday I was around the Borromeo area, I could not help but make a stop over in this place because of my childhood memories. I was so excited with anticipation of being able to taste of its yummines once again and I felt so proud of myself of being able to afford it.

But my expectations were crushed, why?! The taste of the products were so yucky it looked the same but the jelly roll and pianono's taste was so bland and tasted bitter. Gone...the recipe of each product was tweaked for the worst huhuhu... Also, I was disappointed with the ambience of the place. It was bigger but it was cram with a lot of shelves. That didn't do a lot of good for positioning for the products. The placement wasn't thought over. They just bought shelves and that was it. NO glamour and it didn't smell of cakes anymore. Though you could now sit at one corner but it was just a corner that you could eat and go. Yes, the place was not a place that you would take time and cherish the moment you are there. The management didn't take time to think of making the place cozy . I find it sad especially they also have a hotel next to the shop. It is a shame, after all the times they have profited from their patrons all these years. They only evolved at that level.
